There is no need to create or link to month or year records. Many manual workflows have been replaced with automations. If it looks like it is crazy simple, it is! All of the hard work is being done for you on the backend.

Note that while your complete transaction history is preserved, historical yearly overviews are available only for the current and previous calendar year.
